Introducing Smaller Targets
The below describes the steps for the Finding a Balanced Stand exercise but the same principles can be applied to nearly any exercise in fitness
Summary of Steps to Introduce a Smaller Target:
Warm-Up with 2 Large Objects
Replace the Front Foot Target with a smaller piece of equipment. Keep the rear foot target as a larger piece.
Practice this until you see your dog is confidently and for the majority of reps independently front foot targeting the smaller front foot target.
Go back to a larger front foot target and this time replace the Rear Foot Target with a smaller piece of equipment.
Practice this until you see your dog is confidently and for the majority of reps independently rear foot targeting the smaller rear foot target.
Finally, piece it together and try the finding a balanced stand exercise with 2 Smaller Objects.
If you find your dog’s form slipping or they begin to hesitate, go back a few steps and have them target the larger objects again. Continue to mix it up too. Sometimes they target 2 larger objects, then one smaller and one larger, then both small again.
