Sit with Proper Form

Benefits:

  • Adductor Strengthening

  • Forelimb Stability

  • Core Strengthening

Equipment:

  1. 1 Sit Platform - ideally it’s a custom platform measured to your specific dog. If it’s too wide - your dog is likely to ABduct their legs out, which defeats the purpose of the exercise. If the platform is too skinny, then your dog can over tuck their legs, which is also bad for them.

How To:

  1. You can toss a treat directly behind the object then have your dog come into a sit stay. Before asking them to stay, make sure they’re sitting with proper form.

    • Back level (unless breed standard specifies otherwise)

    • Forelimbs straight

    • Rear toes and stifle tracking forward and being held close to the body

  2. Once your dog is able to consistently sit with good form, then it’s time to challenge them a bit by playing “around the clock” or “around the world”

    • If your dog’s nose is 12 o’clock and their tail is 6 o’clock, then the closer you get to 6 o’clock, then the more difficult it will be for your dog.

    • When you move around your dog, they can move their head but they should not move their forelimbs or rear limbs at all in order to see you better. This is a good exercise for neck flexion and overall flexibility. They’re also engaging their adductors and core in order to maintain their sit position.

    • When you go to reward your dog, always return to the 12 o’clock position and reward with their head facing forward. This helps them return to a neutral position.

  3. Another added element of difficulty you can introduce is tossing treats around them and they must ignore them.. This incorporates an impulse control element.
